Michael Spiro

Michael SpiroMichael Spiro is an internationally recognized percussionist whose extensive knowledge of the history of Afro-Cuban music blends perfectly with his skillful and tasteful playing.

While earning his Bachelor's Degree at UCLA he began private studies with Francisco Aguabella, whom he still regards as his percussion guru. Spiro has also studied annually in Cuba since 1981 with musicians like Jose Luis "Changuito" Quintanta and Juan "Claro" Blanco of Orquesta Ritmo Oriental and Los Muñequitos de Matanzas.

His pursuit of knowledge is a passion which he shares through his position as a member of the jazz faculty at the University of California at Berkeley, as well as through clinics for LP and instructional videos. He has also taught master classes and clinics throughout North America.

Spiro's recording credits include a wide range of artists, from Ella Fitzgerald and Bobby McFerrin to Giovanni Hildago and Carlos Santana, as well as film soundtrack work. He is currently touring worldwide with the trio Talking Drums, which is composed of Spiro and fellow LP artist David Garibaldi along with Jesus Diaz. In 1996 his solo album Bata-Ketu was released on Bembe Records.
